What a 4 function calculator is

A four-function calculator performs the four basic arithmetic operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — and deliberately nothing more. No trigonometry, no logarithms, no exponents, no parentheses. Most models add three conveniences on top: a percent key, a sign key to flip positive and negative, and a small memory.

That restraint is the point. A basic calculator is the machine you reach for when the arithmetic is simple and you want no ceremony, and it is the type most often permitted where more capable machines are not. If you need trigonometry, logarithms or order of operations, use the scientific calculator instead.

Why 2 + 3 × 4 gives 20 here, not 14

This is the single most misunderstood thing about basic calculators, and it is worth understanding because it is not a fault.

A four-function calculator uses immediate execution logic: pressing an operator key resolves everything entered so far, right then. Press 2 + 3 and the machine is holding 2 with a pending addition. The moment you press ×, it settles that addition — the display becomes 5 — and starts a new pending multiplication. Press 4 and = and you get 20.

A scientific calculator uses formula logic instead. It stores the whole expression and applies the order of operations at the end, multiplying before it adds, so the same keys give 14. Where every operator is the same rank, as in the last row, both machines agree. The two only diverge when you mix ranks.

How the percent key behaves

On a basic calculator the percent key is not a simple "divide by 100" — it reads what came before it.

This mirrors how physical basic calculators behave, and it is why the percent key feels inconsistent until you know the rule. For percentage change, discounts and "X is what percent of Y", the percentage calculator is the clearer tool.

The keys explained

Key What it does
C Clears only the number you are typing. The pending calculation survives, so you can fix a mistyped value without starting over.
AC Clears the display, the pending operation and the running total. Memory is kept.
Deletes the last digit entered.
± Flips the sign of the displayed number.
M+ / M− Adds or subtracts the displayed number from the memory, for totalling results without writing them down.
MR / MC Recalls the stored value into the display, or erases it. An M shows above the display whenever memory is not zero.
= Completes the calculation. Pressing it again repeats the last operation — press 5 + 3 = then = twice and you get 8, 11, 14.

When a four-function calculator is the right tool

The limitation is the feature. A machine with four keys and no menus cannot be set to the wrong mode, cannot be left in radians, and cannot hide a stored variable that quietly corrupts your next answer. For totalling a shopping list, splitting a bill, checking a quantity on site or reconciling an invoice, that simplicity is worth more than capability.

Reach for something else when the arithmetic itself has structure. If your calculation contains brackets, mixes multiplication with addition in a way that depends on precedence, or needs powers, roots, trigonometry or logarithms, a basic calculator will not refuse — it will simply give you the left-to-right answer, which may not be the one you wanted. That is the single most common way people get a wrong result from a working calculator.

Reading the running total

The small grey line above the display is the part most people ignore, and it is the part that makes immediate execution safe to use. It shows the value the machine is holding and the operator waiting to be applied.

Enter 12 + 8 and the line reads 12 + while the display shows 8. Press × and the line changes to 20 ×: the addition has been settled and 20 is now the running total. Nothing is hidden. If you are ever unsure what the calculator is about to do, that line tells you before you commit.

The tape on the right keeps your last twelve completed calculations, which is the closest thing a screen has to the paper roll on an old adding machine. It is there so you can check a figure you have already cleared from the display, without re-entering it.

What is the difference between C and AC?

C clears only the number you are currently typing and keeps the pending calculation, so you can correct a mistyped value without starting again. AC clears the display, the pending operation and the running total, but leaves whatever you stored in memory.

What do the memory keys do?

M+ adds the displayed number to the memory and M- subtracts it, so you can total several results without writing them down. MR recalls the stored value into the display and MC erases it. An M indicator appears above the display whenever the memory holds something other than zero.

Can I use my keyboard instead of clicking?

Yes. The digits, decimal point and the plus, minus, star and slash keys all work. Enter calculates, Backspace deletes the last digit, Delete clears the entry and Escape clears everything.
