Getting it right

The ounce (weight, 28.35 g) and the fluid ounce (volume, about 29.6 mL in the US) are different units. A recipe asking for 8 oz of flour and one asking for 8 fl oz of milk are not measuring the same kind of quantity.

Sanity-check the direction of the result before you use it. One pound is 16 ounces, so converting pounds to ounces should make the number larger. If it moved the other way, the conversion was applied backwards — the reverse converter is one click away.

About the units

Pound (lb)

The pound is the everyday weight unit of the United States, fixed at exactly 0.45359237 kilograms in 1959. It is divided into 16 ounces.
