How accurate is a measurement taken on a map?

Distances between points are computed on a sphere rather than a flat plane, which is why a straight line drawn across a map is not the same length as the same line measured with a ruler on screen. Over short spans the difference is negligible; over hundreds of kilometres it becomes significant, and the great-circle result is the one that matches reality. The remaining error comes from two places: how precisely you place each click, and the projection distortion of the base map, which grows as you move away from the equator.

What units does the area tool return?

Area is calculated in square metres and converted from there. One hectare is exactly 10 000 square metres. One acre is exactly 43 560 square feet, which is 4 046.8564224 square metres by the same exact definition that gives one foot as 0.3048 metres. Because those factors are defined rather than measured, the conversion introduces no error of its own — only the rounding you choose to display does.

When should you use the radius tool instead?

The radius tool answers a different question from the distance tool. Distance measures a path you trace; radius measures everything within a set straight-line range of one centre point, which is what you want for catchment areas, delivery zones, site influence studies or “how far is that as the crow flies”. A 5 km radius drawn around a depot covers a circle of roughly 78.5 square kilometres, but the drivable distance to its edge will always be longer than 5 km.

Can you measure a perimeter as well as an area?

Yes. Closing a polygon gives both figures at once: the enclosed area and the length of the boundary you drew. That pairing is what fencing, kerbing and boundary-wall estimates need, since the material quantity follows the perimeter while the surfacing quantity follows the area.
